Valentine’s Day is a time for showing some love, so let’s show some love for the planet and make it a Plastic Free Day too!!
Think about all the great gift you can give that don’t have to be wrapped in plastic. Here are my top 5 for both girls & boys:
Order straight from the florist and ask for paper wrap only, no cellophane and no plant food – simple and beautiful. Not an obvious choice for a bloke but you can get some really interesting cacti in pots that are a bit more masculine!
- A Book
A book is a great way to show you care but choosing can be tricky. If you don’t have a book in mind go for a classic or something that’s trending now. My current favourite book is my Almanac, which is still a really good buy in February. It tells you what is happening in the world – tides, plants in season, celebrations & celestial??
- A Candle
Scented candles can add a touch of romance to any room. Look for ones in a glass that are packaged in a box. They look great whilst being eco-friendly. Lidl have them in stock for only £3.99 (for a limited period). The Danish use the most candles in the world as they bring a touch of hygge, that creates happiness, for both sexes.
This should be an easy hit but so often a great product is blighted by excessive plastic packaging. However, many supermarkets do a good chocolate bar and if you go for 70% Cocoa, or over, you are providing a positive health benefit too – only if eaten in moderation of course!! My current favourite is Lidl dark chocolate with raspberry but the foil around the chocolate is not recyclable – why not? Just wrap it in ordinary foil!!!
Thankfully, wine is often plastic free and if you go for a glass bottle with a metal screw cap- you are on a winner. Try Aldi Organic Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie, at £5.99 it’s a fab wine that has a mellow body and no hanger initiating sulphites. Or a Toro Loco Organic red for £4.99- Perfect!
